Jim East@slrpnk.netOPMto Fruit & Fruit Trees@slrpnk.net•What fruit do you wish more people knew about?English2·11 小时前It will be years before I’m able to try the fruit of Diospyros blancoi, but I’ve heard only good things!
Jim East@slrpnk.netOPMto Fruit & Fruit Trees@slrpnk.net•What fruit do you wish more people knew about?English2·1 天前Do you mean Diospyros kaki? There are many species of persimmons, but I concur, many people don’t even seem to know what they are! I’m growing Diospyros blancoi since that’s what should do well in this climate.
Jim East@slrpnk.netOPMto Fruit & Fruit Trees@slrpnk.net•What fruit do you wish more people knew about?English31·2 天前Versatile too! Let it grow up big and strong for fruit production and overhead shade for other trees, or keep it small for chop-and-drop. Easy to guerrilla-plant it too, as seeds sprout readily in rainy weather, so you can simply load a sack of them on the bike and do some ride-by seed-bombing. Really an important plant.

Jim East@slrpnk.netto Fediverse@lemmy.world•IDEA to make this site standout why don't you make a live chatbox for people who have logged in?English5·2 天前slrpnk.net already has its own XMPP chat option where one’s Lemmy username (e.g. [email protected]) is one’s XMPP address, and I imagine that other instances could do something similar if they wanted. XMPP is federated, so it doesn’t require any Lemmy-side coding for the federation aspect. For instance-wide chat (visible to all users of the instance), an implementation in XMPP would probably be easier as well, perhaps using some form of the group chat functionality. What does your proposal offer that cannot be done using XMPP?
Jim East@slrpnk.netto Fedigrow@lemm.ee•Weekly thread - How are you doing with your communities?English3·3 天前The [email protected] yes, and I’ll wait a while before posting again. [email protected] is currently promoted in the monthly SLRPNK update post, so I’ll wait until next month to promote it elsewhere.
Jim East@slrpnk.netto Fedigrow@lemm.ee•Weekly thread - How are you doing with your communities?English3·3 天前[email protected] is showing slow but steady subscriber growth. Would be great if others would start posting to it though.
Not “my” community, but [email protected] is more or less the same. Slow subscriber growth, and still not many people posting.
As poVoq suggested, start a tree nursery and plant trees around. Also grow your own food. These two things can be the same thing.

Three Wildfires Show Otherwise.English11·12 天前Climate change will affect the whole world, but some areas will be more affected than others. Higher elevations at the equator should remain relatively stable.
Jim East@slrpnk.netOPto United Kingdom@feddit.uk•Low River Levels in UK Raise Concerns of DroughtEnglish3·12 天前Deforestation is part of it. With continued climate change, such drought or flood events will only get more and more frequent outside of the equatorial region, with the most severe adverse weather events expected between 30°N and 60°N. The ocean will buffer the UK a bit from temperature extremes, but the inherent seasonality of the climate will still result in large variations in both temperature and precipitation. The temperature of the Atlantic Ocean is a major influence as well.
And let’s not forget those delicious ovaries! Sweet, juicy, engorged ovaries… Yum! 😋

Jim East@slrpnk.netOPMto Fruit & Fruit Trees@slrpnk.net•What is your favourite fruit tree to grow?English3·13 天前Your plum woes call to mind horror stories of cherimoya in the tropics… We should all learn to eat what we can grow rather than stubbornly trying to grow everything that we’d like to eat.

I’ve been fascinated by this fruit for a long time! I don’t think that I could grow it here, but if I lived in its native range, I would definitely go out in the forest and search for it every chance I got! I’ve even heard of a pawpaw that tasted like durian, but that may have been an exaggeration.
